300% COTTON | BOOK DESIGN, COVER AND TYPE TREATMENT
Following the international success of the best-selling FL@33-designed book 200% Cotton – New T-shirt Graphics by Helen Walters (2004) and its 200% promo T-shirts FL@33 produced in collaboration with Laurence King Publishing, we were recommissioned to design the book's sequel – 300% Cotton – More T-shirt Graphics (2006) by the same author.
___ Book design and front cover illustration / type treatment are by FL@33. The book also features various FL@33-designed Stereohype T-shirts besides many international T-shirt gems.
___ The black and white cover was enhanced with gold foil-block for the illustrated thread.
300% COTTON |LAYOUT, GRID AND VISUAL IDENTITY
200% Cotton and its sequel are image-based books containing over 1,000 illustrations each. The grid FL@33 developed had to be flexible, provide consistency, and make the design process relatively systematic.
___ The brief for 300% Cotton was to refresh the layout while maintaining the visual identity of the previous title in the series. We chose to exploit the versatility of the grid by introducing diagonals to the layout. The result is a lively reinterpretation of the previously used system.
___ Shown here are sample spreads, cover details, chapter openers and the BLAD (Book Layout And Design) – produced prior to starting the complete book design in order for the publisher to be able to present the project at book fairs.
300% COTTON | 300% PROMO T-SHIRT
The 300% promo T-shirt was produced especially for the book launch – a collaboration between Laurence King Publishing, FL@33 and the studio's T-shirt label Stereohype.
___ A few remaining 300% T-shirts are still available at stereohype.com. To customise the T-shirts they came with a set of three badges until 2008 featuring the fluffy words Cotton and two of the five chapter titles of the book itself: Make and Love.
300% COTTON | TEXT EXCERPTS
'Founded by the designers of this very book, Tomi Vollauschek and Agathe Jacquillat, stereohype.com is an online boutique offering limited-edition products designed by the pair and other emerging and established artists. Their own designs show their love of whimsical, charming imagery, and their most recent collection includes a range for babies and children, as well as more tailored clothing to go along with their perennially popular printed T-shirts.' Helen Walters, from 300% Cotton's chapter DO, p.130
