FEDRIGONI 366 | CALENDAR 2024 | DESIGN COMPENDIUM
Following FL@33's six previous contributions to the Fedrigoni 365 calendars in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 by Italian paper company Fedrigoni, FL@33's Tomi Vollauschek was kindly included for a seventh year running, as one of the very few contributors to all calendars so far.
___ Tomi Vollauschek contributed a visual interpretation of a specific, randomly allocated date in 2024. This time he created a more abstract artwork for the generative design-themed publication – a typographic experiment with the number 16 (August 2024).
___ Together all the many hundreds of contributions by artists, designers and studios form the beautifully designed calendar 2024 and design compendium Fedrigoni 366 (2024).
FL@33 CONTRIBUTION | 16 August 2024
As printed in the publication: ꩜
___ An arithmetic +1 sequence utilising 10 colours. An abstract composition based on a circular grid with outer and inner rings, each divided into 16 elements but only showing 1–16 of each of them.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION | 2017–ongoing
Fedrigoni 365, designed by TM for Fedrigoni UK, started in 2017 as an unprecedented collaboration involving designers, illustrators and photographers from throughout the UK, gathered together by an open call for entries.
___ Now in its seventh year, the book has once again managed to pull together hundreds of creative masterminds. Previous editions of the publication have put the spotlight on select stocks from Fedrigoni’s vast range of papers, from an entirely black book in 2018 to a completely white edition in 2019. This was followed by a recycled rainbow of colours in 2020, a digitally randomised explosion of colours in 2021, a multi-volume publication in 2022 to a shades of red Love-themed edition in 2023.

Your date | 16 August
The deadline | 9am, Monday 4th September 2023
Brief | This year, Fedrigoni 366 is being produced in collaboration with FE Burman using HP Indigo digital print technology.
___ HP SmartStream Designer combined with Indigo digital print technology gives the exciting potential to harness the power of generative design — meaning your design will be different in every single book.
___ Making a generative design | We would like you to interpret the number that has been allocated to you in the body of the email. This could be either a literal or an abstract interpretation of the number or the date itself. For example, if you are given 7 February, you will be expected to interpret the number 7.
___ Alongside the number we would like you to consider colour and how it can be used to make your design generative. The HP Mosaic software allows unique graphics to be created from a single source file.
___Colour shuffle | Every design submitted to this year’s project needs to include 3-10 colours, selected from the overall palette of 10. These colours will be randomly shuffled within your design to make different colour combinations in each book. For example, if you set your artwork up to use 4 of the colours, as shown below, your design will be randomly shuffled through the full 10 colour palette across the print run.
Artwork | Please follow the below specifications.
Document Size | 132 x 132mm, no bleed.
Formats | HP SmartStream Designer Colour Shuffle can ONLY accept vector based data (no raster based designs). Any raster based designs or vector based designs with embedded raster data will be omitted without notice. When supplying final artwork, please save your pure vector data file as a PDF or EPS.
Colour | All designs are to be reproduced in the colour swatches provided. Please download and install the swatches, and only use the swatches provided. To load the palette, select ‘Window’ > ‘Swatches’ and the swatch palette will open. In the swatch palette, choose ‘Open Swatch Library’ and select ‘Other Library’. Download colour swatches here.
Submit | (...) You will be asked for details relating to your entry and the option to include up to 50 words to accompany the design.
CHARITY
All profits from previous editions have been donated to charity, so far raising over £30,000. Profits from sales this year will also be donated.
