FL@33 AT ECV AIX | MASTER DIPLOMA JURY
Kindly invited for the first time to come to ECV's Aix-en-Provence branch, FL@33's Tomi Vollauschek was honoured to meet the ECV Aix Visual Communication team and students.
___ This was a record-breaking third FL@33 / ECV collaboration in 2020, that followed the two latest design residencies with FL@33 workshops 'Personal projects and the Power of Three' that took place in February and March at ECV Lille and ECV Bordeaux respecively, where Tomi also gave an evening lecture this time.
___ This ECV jury panel involvement was only the second time we had the honour following another Master graduation judging in 2016 at ECV Lille.
___ It is of course an extremely sad and somber affair to graduate in the midst of a global pandemic but while we all felt sorry for them, the students did at least have a chance to finish their projects over the extended summer period and actually get the opportunity to physically present their work to an international jury panel. Not all students in world had such a chance in 2020.
___ All presentations involved us wearing masks in otherwise empty rooms with open windows and without an audience and we were all as socially distanced as possible. Not ideal of course but we all did our best to give the students their well-deserved share of normality and attention after many years of studying Visual Communication. Presentations took place in English this time and surprisingly many students developed highly professional brand, product and publication concepts that could really be launched in real life.
___ The jury panel: Karel Balas, Magali Tardy Guyot, Erik Haberfeld, Ronan Guillou, Augustin Camus and Tomi Vollauschek. We judged harshly – yet appropriately fair and generously. All the best to the graduates 2020: Valentin Anjubault, Carla Caillol, Soone Cheylan, Estelle Couturier, Juliette Couvra, Ludivine Dormes, Lucien Durand, Marie Eimann, Théo Garnier, Déborah Gordien, Julie Hernandez, Mariya Korostelyova, Louis Labarthe, Théo Lancelot, Bertille Lorillard, Naïs Mallaret, Camille Marnot, Marie Maroilleau, Jane Mathieu, Marianne Mei, Marine Michel Paoli, Axel Mimault and Laurie Mouysset.
___ Remember: the journey only just begins. It was a pleasure to meet you all.
GETTING THERE AND BACK | WORTH A MENTION IN 2020
Quite the journey all this. After a summer break abroad in the middle of nowhere, negative Covid and anti-body tests there and following voluntary self-isolation in Frankfurt, Tomi could not go back to the UK and risk to not be able to fly to Marseille days later from there. WIth an initially booked flight having been canceled by the airline due to numerous international changing travel restrictions. Tomi eventually made use of a travel corridor and flew directly from Frankfurt to Marseille airport to join the ECV team in nearby Aix-en-Provence, where people already wore masks outdoors in the city centre – still a rather unusual sight for Western Europe at that time. This was followed by yet another negative Covid test upon return at Frankfurt airport and even more self-isolation there – and upon arrival in London another 10+ days of that. Strange times indeed...
