BASICS DESIGN 01: FORMAT | TWO FL@33 PROJECTS
The very first book in this now well-established series – translated into many languages – features FL@33's Trans-form magazine and the website agatheHD.com.

|pp.62–63| Trans-form | Imposition and multiple stock | Scale | Client: Self-initiated project by FL@33 | Design: FL@33 | Process: Four-colour litho oversized loose-leaf journal (((and stapled))) | Trans-form magazine | For a publication containing images of cranes on the skyline, FL@33 chose an oversized, loose-leaf oversized magazine format. The format selection marries with the oversized scale of the machinery depicted in the photographs.
|pp.180–181| agatheHD.com | Film and moving image | Websites and hand-helds | Client: AgatheHD | Design: FL@33 | Process: Flash (((and mostly html))) website made to look like the early Macintosh operating system | AgatheHD | The appropriation and adaptation of other objects is nothing new. For her website, Agathe Jacquillat took the appearance of the Macintosh operating system as her inspiration and used it as the basis of her design. When viewed on a Macintosh, this creates a 'screen' within the screen. The appropriation of the visual appearance of software is also used elsewhere in the site; the portfolio section, for instance, is designed to look like the layers palette in Photoshop. | agatheHD.com

AVAs Basics Design titles are designed to provide visual arts students with a theoretical and practical exploration of each of the fundamental topics within the discipline of Graphic Design. Packed with examples from students and professionals and fully illustrated with clear diagrams and inspiring imagery, they offer an essential exploration of the subject. Format represents the physical point of contact with the user, affecting how a designs printed or digital information is received. Format demonstrates how a creative approach to format selection and presentation space can produce dramatic results in both print and digital media. The book examines established format standards and suggests how thoughtful application of pre-existing models can add an extra dimension to design.
