FL@33's Tomi Vollauschek contributed three especially created postcards for the annual postcard exhibition and fundraising sale at the Royal College of Art in London – entitled RCA Secret.
These typographic paper compositions were part of Profile Typeface – a self-initiated experiment to explore legibility of three-dimensional letters seen only from the side, top or bottom respectively. Helvetica bold was used and the three final die-cut postcards allowed the secret word to be more easily deciphered when comparing the overlapped cards. Two postcards show the letters seen from the left or the right respectively – while the third postcard shows the letters from the top and bottom. Fascinatingly – the word is almost legible when both – the left and the right – sides of the letters are shown next to each other.
The project was inspired by Ji Lee's brilliant Univers Revolved project that later also featured in FL@33's The 3D Type Book (Laurence King Publishing, 2011).
RCA Secret: Original works of art for only £40 at the annual postcard exhibition and fundraising sale now in its 16th year. You guess who it's by. The postcards are signed only on the reverse. The author of each work will remain a secret until after the cards are purchased and the signature on the back is revealed. London, 13–20 Nov 2009
