patterns – new surface design   published in May 2007
book design, cover illustration and type treatment

Following the international success of the FL@33-designed books 200% Cotton (2004) and its sequel 300% Cotton (2006) we were recommissioned by Laurence King Publishing to design this patterns book on new surface design.

The book cover we also designed has a special finishing with spot uv highlights and sexy black flock. You can see some details of the untrimmed press sheet of the cover here.

Patterns features 400 colour illustrations on 240 pages. All selected images were organised and sorted by colour by the book's author Drusilla Cole. To avoid some of the patterns potentially clashing with each other we had the freedom to edit the whole chain of 400 patterns throughout the book by featuring the most representable ones bigger and vice versa. A particularly versatile grid was developed for this challenging project. And thanks to this grid and a lot of work everything came together just fine at the end.
